Halcyon sits down with Claptone

This month we catch up with the international DJ of mystery, Claptone. He is with us Halloween night, Tuesday October 31st along with Tensnake and Christian Martin. Expect a night of epic proportions!

We are thrilled to be hosting the Masquerade at Halcyon this Halloween. So appropriate to host Claptone on a night steeped in magic and mystery. We have fabulous costumes planned for the Masquerade! You have generously offered Claptone mask replicas for the first 300 guests to arrive. How many masks do you own personally?

I have countless masks, just imagine a high number and I own that many!

How many claptone masks have been produced during your existence?

My memory over the centuries has got weaker and weaker, but my minions don’t stop producing mask for me since decades. Just recently they had to work overtime again as I reached 1 million facebook fans and gave out masks for free to every fan and follower who felt the desire to own one…

Is the mask always the same or has it developed along with your music and style?

The mask should have been the same all these years but as it’s forged by people that are slight irregularities and I don’t like that so much. But some things in life you just need to live with I guess.

This is the first time you’ve brought the Masquerade to San Francisco. What does the Masquerade mean to you?

May I quote from the event info that someone I paid for has written after – which is purely my guess – he or she must have had a joint or two: “What if by engaging our imagination and opening our minds we could unlock the door to a world of wonders? Put on your mask and be part of this freak circus. Find your happy place where the craziest ideas and the grandest dreams lie waiting, a place where wonders abound for those who trust their imagination. In order to glimpse the marvels that lie just below the surface, just close our eyes, listen and dance. Lose yourself in a sonic realm conducted by some of the scenes best DJs and of course the masked man himself.” Sometime I wonder if I should … but then … Well people love that concept. But a very neat part of it is that I curate the whole musical line up, so I have the pleasure to present the music I like to you all night long, lots of times playing an extended set myself. On top of that I bring my stage design, performers and other surprises to make this an immersive experience for my beloved guests. The Masquerades I did so far this year and the guests I was able to invite have been just mindblowing.

Why do you like attendees to be “masked” at the masquerade?

Because they should use this chance to be someone else, be someone they ever wanted to be. Perceive and get perceived differently than in every day life. For more colorful words see above.

Tell us what your key track for this Halloween weekend is?

That’s a secret – I love secrets.

Fans are excited to see you perform in our intimate room, but the mystery must remain. What advice do you have for fans who are attending their first Masquerade?

Come with an open heart and an open mind. We look forward to spending Halloween with you and experiencing an unforgettable night!
